Letter To The Editor: Our City Council at Work

Editors Note: The views and opinions expressed in this editorial are not necessarily the views or opinions of Oskaloosa News.

It is my understanding the city council with their relentless wisdom and our tax payer money has or is contemplating on giving to several entities the sum of 100,000 and 200,000 dollar gifts. What they are not informing you are the gifts come at a cost to our community. I understand the manager and council with a progressive budget review have developed a budget proposal to cut or not replace retiring public safety employees. This directly affects everyone in our community and surrounding area that relies on our public safety services. These planned measures are being done to be able to afford giving the free money to these organizations. Now you are most likely going to be told differently, however where are the funds coming from and why in the world would they be cutting public safety personnel if that is not how they intend to accomplish providing these funds? There will be a lot of other entities lining up for more bailouts in the future. Why aren’t these entities looking at their own budgets and making cuts and decisions to balance their budgets? How did the voting people of Oskaloosa accomplish finding the present members on the Oskaloosa council to run this city in this type of reckless and dangerous manner? Citizens should be very concerned with the direction the city is being lead. Oskaloosa needs a change in our community leadership now before it is too late and all of our community services are compromised.
