Mary Wren Northway, 77, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, September 14, 2014, at her home in Oskaloosa. She was born October 12, 1936, in Des Moines, the daughter of Fred L. and Loretta Elizabeth Baird Wren.

Mary attended East High School in Des Moines, where she was known as “Wren Bird”. On June 21, 1953, Mary was united in marriage to Everett Northway at Pella, Iowa. Everett died March 12, 2013.

Following marriage, Mary worked as a nurse at the hospital and in private homes. She also sold Tupperware in the 1970’s, worked at Pamida in Pella, and sold Avon in the 80’s and 90’s. She spent many years in the Avon Presidents Club for sales and leadership. Lastly, Mary worked at Mahaska Manor and retired from there in 2003.

Mary was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, Moose Lodge and The Eagles. She enjoyed doing crafts with her daughter Judy, attending Been There Done That, and spending time with her family. Mary enjoyed going to garage sales and wheeling & dealing. Her home was always open to family and friends and she will be remembered as the neighborhood grandma.

Her family includes her two children and their spouses: Judith (& Rodney “Butch”) Wharton of San Angelo, Texas, and Fred (& Bonnie) Northway of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren: Robert Northway, Timothy Northway, Chad Northway, Ray Wharton, Cherlynn Waite, and Travis Northway; twelve great grandchildren: Misty Northway, Dalton Northway, Bobby Northway, Cole and Jaxson Waite, Douglas and Dulcie Northway, Nico Venitra, Avery Northway, Jessica and Clark Chapan, and Shelby Wharton; a great great granddaughter, Ashton Northway; two sisters in law: Dollie Watters of Des Moines and LouAnne Wren of Davenport.

In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, James Wharton; a sister, Hattie Scheffers; and four brothers: Bobby, Francis, Junior and James Wren.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 19, 2014, at 10:00 A.M. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jeff Belger officiating.
Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery.
Visitation will begin Thursday, September 18, 2014 after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
The Rosary will be recited at 4:30 in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
The family will be present at the funeral chapel from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
A Christian Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. in the funeral chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
