Bellevue, Neb.–The Statesmen women’s soccer team had several good opportunities to get on the board and break up Bellevue’s perfect season, but could not capitalize in a 2-0 non-conference loss Saturday.

WPU (3-4) was outshot 11-3, but managed an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Unfortunately, none of those set pieces were finished off. The Bruins (4-0), however, did find the back of the netting with goals in the 15th (off a corner kick) and 60th minutes.

Kelly Button (Sr., Tucson, Ariz., Business Management) had five stops Saturday.

“We went toe to toe with a good side today and I thought we did a great job of making things difficult for them,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “We changed things a little at halftime and we started to get more of a foothold in the game, playing the majority of that half in Bellevue’s side.”

“This was a gutsy performance, but we were undone with poor marking on a set piece and a great individual goal at the end of the day,” McGowan said. “I am proud of our reaction and the fighting spirit we showed throughout.”

Next Up: William Penn returns home Wednesday to host Avila (Mo.) in non-conference play at 5 p.m.
