Clinton–Facing strong competition, the William Penn volleyball team fell short on four occasions at the Ashford Tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Statesmen (2-13) opened the tourney Friday with a 3-0 loss to Ashford (15-25, 19-25, 14-25) and then fell 3-1 to Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) (18-25, 12-25, 29-27, 19-25). On Saturday, WPU was swept 3-0 by league foe St. Ambrose (15-25, 15-25, 17-25) and dropped a 3-1 decision to Judson (Ill.) (21-25, 19-25, 25-21, 18-25).

Ashford 3, WPU 0

Outhit .233 to -.020, Ana Gutch (Sr., Eddyville, Iowa, Secondary Education) was tops offensively for William Penn with eight kills, while Leyra Jusino (Jr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) tallied 22 assists. Ten digs from Kayce Skocko (Jr., Watsonville, Calif., Business Management) and three aces by Emily McHugh (Jr., Plainfield, Ill., Pre-Law & Psychology) also paced the navy and gold.

Cardinal Stritch 3, WPU 1

Kylie Giger (Jr., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) had a strong showing with 18 kills and two aces as William Penn lost the attack battle by a slim .308-.284 margin.

Skocko finished with nine winners and Shawni Wills (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) had seven. Jusino assisted on 33 points, while Danielle Breeher (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) posted 16 digs.

St. Ambrose 3, WPU 0

The non-conference battle between the Midwest Collegiate Conference rivals unfortunately was mostly one-sided with the Queen Bees holding a .441-.173 edge in hitting. Giger’s 11 kills were a team best, while Erika Getz (Jr., Parsons, Kan., Physical Education) added seven and Gutch had six.

Jusino (27 assists), Breeher (11 digs), and Wills (two block assists) were also productive in Saturday’s opener.

Judson 3, WPU 1

The weekend finale witnessed the Statesmen hit .185 and have three players in double-doubles. Giger managed 14 kills and 14 digs, Skocko had 12 kills and 12 digs, and Jusino contributed 38 assists and ten digs. Breeher’s 25 digs paced the squad’s defensive efforts.

“We saw really good teams and it was good for us as our players got exposed to ranked teams and got to see what it takes to play at that level,” Head Coach Jennifer Carlson said.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Forest City Wednesday to face Waldorf in non-conference play at 7 p.m.
