Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s soccer team had its winning streak stopped Wednesday with a 1-0 setback to Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) in non-conference play.

Alyce Correia (So., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) tallied three shots, but the Statesmen (3-3) lost for the first time in three games as windy and cold conditions slowed action. There were just 21 total shots with the Trojans (1-3) owning a 12-9 edge.

The teams played to a scoreless tie through the first 70 minutes, but a foul whistled on WPU in its defensive box awarded H-LG a penalty kick and Marion Bravo put it away at the 70:16 mark for the lone goal.

Kelly Button (Sr., Tucson, Ariz., Business Management) recorded five saves between the pipes.

“This result was a tough one to take on many levels, but hopefully we can learn from it and move forward,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “We played some really nice soccer and once again created chances, but we did not take advantage of the wind in the first half and the possible chances it could have helped create.”

“We have some work to do on the practice ground and if the girls can continue with the effort they are showing we can bounce back. With tough games ahead we will have to come together and get each other through them.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Bellevue, Neb. Saturday to face Bellevue in non-conference action at 5 p.m.
