Moravia–The Statesmen women’s golf team made easy work of a difficult course as it won the team crown at the Midwest Collegiate Invitational that it hosted Monday and Tuesday.

#16 WPU was first out of eight teams with a two-day tally of 616 (305-311) at The Preserve Golf Course–a par-72 layout. Despite having #27 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and #34 Grand View in the field, the varsity actually got its biggest challenge from the varsity reserve which placed second at 633 (319-314). GVU was third (645) and ONU was fourth (669).

The team’s first-round score of 305 set a new 18-hole record by two strokes, while the Statesmen’s 616 total tally demolished its 36-hole mark of 630. Both records were previously set last fall.

Backing up her win from two weeks ago, Demi Coertze (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Digital Communication) claimed another individual title with a par of 74’s (148 total) to win by two strokes. She made up a three-shot deficit entering the second day, and like the rest of the field, had to battle through two lightning delays to finish off the 42-person event.

Coertze’s 148 is a new program mark as well, breaking the old mark of 151 by Maggie Yang (Sr., Chino, Calif., Biology) by three strokes.

Three of her varsity teammates were also in the top ten, headlined by Maggie Yang in sixth at 156 (77-79). Courtney Cunningham (So., Muskogee, Okla., Computer Science) was right behind her in seventh at 158 (76-82), while Natalie Booton (Jr., Mount Pleasant, Elementary Education) tied for ninth at 160 (84-76).

Alexandria Eckenrod (Sr., Mason City, Iowa, Elementary Education) wrapped up the varsity’s scoring in a tie for 12th (78-83–161).

Guided by a career-best 73 that was just one stroke off another school record, Jing Yang (So., Woodland Hills, Calif., Biology) led the varsity reservists by taking third at 151 (78-73). Ashley Manhnieo (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) was in the top ten as well, tying for ninth at 160 (84-76).

Carly Schmalz (So., Buffalo Lake, Minn., American Government), in a tie for 12th (79-82–161), Jodi Saito (So., Mililani, Hawaii), in 16th (78-93–171), and Brooke Fletcher (Fr., Atlantic, Iowa, Business Management), in a tie for 19th (93-83–176), competed for the VR crew as well.

Playing as individuals, Alexi Rule (So., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Education) was 15th overall (82-86–168) and Jordan Postma (Fr., Marion, Iowa, Biology) was 30th (87-98–185).

Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before traveling to Galena, Ill. on September 20-21 to compete in the Clarke Invitational at Eagle Ridge South Golf Course.
