Vern E. Gilbert Jr., 75, of Oskaloosa passed away Monday night, September 1, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Vern Earl Gilbert Jr., son of Vern Earl Sr. and Bessie May (Simons), was born December 4, 1938, in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Vern was a graduate of Oskaloosa High School in 1958. He served with the U.S. Army from 1960-1964.

Over the years he worked for Brady Davis Grain Boxes, Clow Valve Company and lastly for Kelderman Manufacturing.

In his spare time Vern enjoyed building bird houses, going to flea markets, playing pool and hunting & fishing.

His family includes a son, John (& Terri) Gilbert of Knoxville, IA; a daughter, Debbie Lanser of Pella; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Gilbert of Oskaloosa; sisters: Betty (& Keith) Briezalaar of Pella and Pearl (& Jim) Robinson of Woodland, TX and several nieces and nephews.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents.

As was his wish, Vern’s body has been cremated.
Private Graveside Services will be held at Old White Cemetery. Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
