Season Opener Goes to Visitors in Overtime
Oskaloosa–A last-minute game-tying goal could not lift the Statesmen women’s soccer team as it dropped its season opener in overtime 3-2 to Central Methodist (Mo.) Tuesday.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first 16 minutes, but just like that William Penn (0-1) fell into a quick hole when the Eagles scored twice in a span of just 48 seconds.
WPU bounced back in the 24th minute as Monique Nogueira (Melbourne, Australia, Exercise Science) finished off a pass that came from over the top by Jaymie Padilla (Sr., Mesa, Ariz., Physical Education).
The game remained 2-1 in favor of CMU until the waning seconds. With just 1:48 left on the clock, Francis Lee (Fr., Fort Dodge, Iowa, Undecided) matched Nogueira with a goal in her first collegiate contest. Isabel Sandez (Jr., Bloomington, Calif., Exercise Science) assisted on the score that forced overtime.
Unfortunately, the Eagles had the last say, scoring the sudden death winner just 2:26 into the first extra period.
Making her first appearance between the pipes, converted goalkeeper Kelly Button (Sr., Tucson, Ariz., Business Management) had four saves in the loss. William Penn was outshot 13-10.
Next Up–William Penn travels to St. Louis, Mo. Saturday to face Harris-Stowe State for a non-conference matchup at noon.
