Shirley Hansen, 88, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Serenity House on August 21, 2014. She was born July 10, 1926, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Harry M. and Hazel Gensheimer Cook.

Following school she worked as a waitress at a restaurant in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. She went on to sell real estate for a time. In 1952, she moved to California.

Shirley married the love of her life, Ed Hansen, in the late ‘60s. She opened her own restaurant, Hansen’s Restaurant, in Gold Rush Plaza in Auburn, California.

In 1996, Upon Ed’s passing, Shirley moved to Oskaloosa to be closer to family members.

Shirley enjoyed cooking, painting, crocheting, spending time with family and enjoyed a special bond with her dog, Lucy. Shirley was loved by all that knew her. She had a positive attitude and would brighten the day of those she would encounter.

Survivors include her children: David Cyphers, Kim (& Tim) Blackwell, Bob (& Sharel) Cyphers; grandchildren: Jessica Cyphers, Austin (& Brook) Blackwell, Bobby (& Brooke) Cyphers, Samantha Blackwell, Jordan Cyphers; great-grandchildren: Banx Blackwell, Harlow Coleman, Robby Cyphers, and Bond Blackwell; siblings: Mildred Findlay, Chuck Cook and George “Buck” Cook.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Hazel (Gensheimer) Cook; husband, Ed; and five siblings.

A private ceremony will be held in November in Oregon with family.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations for the Hospice Serenity House and mailed to Bates Funeral Chapel, 114 South 7th Street, Oskaloosa, Iowa 52577.
