November 18, 1955 – August 13, 2014
Montezuma, Iowa | Age 58

Jon R. Peterson, 58, of Montezuma, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014, in the Hospice Unit of Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell, Iowa, after suffering with cancer for three years. He was born November 18, 1955, in Aledo, Illinois, to Herbert F. and Mildred E. Hicks Peterson.

Jon resided in Aledo in his earlier years, moving to Oskaloosa, Iowa, in the late 1960’s. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, in 1973.

He married Cindy Hibler on March 6, 1976. They later divorced. Then on August 12, 2006, he married his longtime best friend, Lindy Paul, in the Chapel on the Iowa State Fair Grounds, Des Moines, Iowa.

Jon started helping on the farm at a young age for John VanGendren, in Unionville, MO. He later worked with his family, Sylvan and Rachel VeVerka, on their rural Montezuma farm. Following high school, he worked for Manatt’s on the road crew, and later became the tire shop manager in Brooklyn. Presently, he was an Account Consultant Manager for Allied Oil and Supply, Inc. in Des Moines, covering accounts statewide. He was currently ranked third top consultant for the entire company and first in his district, a distinction he worked hard to achieve, as he always strived to better himself. He continued to work up until his illness would no longer allow him to travel. His last working day was August 8, 2014.

Jon loved to attend the Iowa State Fair every year and was at the fair this year on two occasions. He was a member of the Fair’s Blue Ribbon Foundation for several years and enjoyed camping with friends from various parts of the state. He loved to golf, snow ski in Colorado, participate in the Pony Express, Figure 8 races, pool and dancing.

He will be remembered for his humor, quick wit, and caring for others. He loved to spend time with his family and friends, especially enjoying his grandsons.

He is survived by his wife, Lindy, of Montezuma; a daughter Amy (& Eric) Stout, of Oskaloosa; a son, Michael J. Peterson, of Deep River; three grandsons: Dawson Davis, Hunter Davis and Scott Stout; two sisters: Jan Feehan and Joanne Day, both of Oskaloosa; many nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Peterson and Mildred Hicks Peterson; grandparents: Albert John and Edith Peterson, of Alexis, Illinois and John and Emma Hicks, of Montezuma, Iowa; brothers-in-law: Allen Feehan and James G. Day; along with a niece, uncles, aunts and cousins.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Monday, August 18, 2014 at the Community Hope Church in Montezuma with a luncheon to follow in the fellowship hall of the church.
Visitation will be held Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the Community Hope Church with the family present to greet friends from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
As for Jon’s wish, a cremation will take place following the service and a private family burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the “Jon Peterson Memorial Fund” to be used to honor his name at the Iowa State Fair.
