Oskaloosa–For the third year in a row, the William Penn men’s soccer team is picked to finish fifth in a very competitive Midwest Collegiate Conference as the preseason coaches’ poll was released today.

The Statesmen, who were 10-8-2 last year (1-4-1 MCC), received 26 points and are just nine points behind second place AIB (one first-place vote) and St. Ambrose.

Defending regular season and tournament winner Grand View is a near unanimous choice to again defend its crown. The Vikings, who were ranked #1 in the NAIA at the end of the year (eliminated at nationals in the round of 16), earned 48 points with six first-place votes.

AIB and St. Ambrose earned 35 points each, while Mount Mercy is fourth with 27 points. Viterbo (14) and Clarke (11) round out the poll.

WPU begins the fall slate on August 23 by traveling to Munster, Ind. to face Purdue-Calumet. The Statesmen play their first MCC contest at home against Grand View on October 1.
