Coertze Leads WPU Foursome at State Amateur
Waverly–Demi Coertze (Johannesburg, South Africa, Digital Communications) proved this past year she can play with the best in the NAIA, but this past week she made it known she can compete with linksters of all levels as she finished high at the 90th Annual Iowa Women’s Amateur Championship.
Coertze tied for sixth out of 81 players at the par-72 Centennial Oaks Golf Club. The soon-to-be junior posted a 75 on the first day to sit in a tie for third and then added rounds of 77 and 78 to finish securely in the top ten at 230.
Coertze was a first-team all-Midwest Collegiate Conference performer and an NAIA Third-Team All-American. She tied for 22nd at the NAIA National Championships in May.
Megan Furnish of Cedar Rapids retained her title for the second year in a row by defeating Central City’s Christy Nelson in the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Furnish, who will be a senior at NCAA Division I Missouri State, shot 74-74-73–221, while Nelson, who will be a junior at NCAA Division II Upper Iowa, went 72-77-72 for her 221.
