Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum announces their schedule of events next week in conjunction with Iowa Museum Week. Included in a week of regular tours are three special evening events and the June Saturday Event.

On Monday, April 14th Governor Terry Branstad proclaimed June 9-15, 2014 Iowa Museum Week.
Iowa Museum Week is held annually to raise awareness of the significant contributions made to Iowa communities by their museums in relation to quality of life, economic life, tourism, and education.

In his proclamation, Governor Branstad recognized the importance of Iowa’s museums, stating that Iowa Museum Week will celebrate the crucial role of Iowa’s museums in preserving the historical fabric and memory of Iowa through preservation of artifacts and archives; in providing educational resources and programs which expand learning opportunities for all ages; in contributing to a vibrant community and state economy through job creation, purchase of goods and services, and by attracting tourism revenue to the community and state; and in their significant role in enhancing community quality of life.

The public is encouraged to visit and support the museums in their community on a regular basis. Support Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum during this week to learn about and explore local history.

Wednesday evening June 11 at 6 or 7 pm “A Visit with Aunt Matt.” Kelly Halbert portrays Martha Jane Nelson, the second Nelson daughter who lived her whole life on the farm. Visit with her as she shares her life and family stories – reservations required, refreshments served.

Thursday evening, June 12 at 6:30 pm the Heartland Boot Scooters will head up the Barn Dance at Bradbury Hall. It’ll be a foot stompin’ good time. All ages invited, no experience necessary! Admission $5.00 for adults.

Friday evening, June 13 at 5:30 pm the Mahaska County Historical Society offers a free dinner to all members – new or old! If you are not a member, come join the MCHS as a family for just $18.00 for 2014. If you are a member just come on out for friendship, food and fun.

Top the evening off with a concert by Double Dose. – This free will donation concert kicks off the summer Tunes at Twilight series at Nelson Pioneer Farm. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs.
Finish off the week with Knots, Loops and other Twisted Crafts! An event from noon to 4 pm on Saturday June 14th. The Mahaska Stitch and Quilt guild will demonstrate and teach quilting in Bradbury Hall. There will be rope making, spinning, weaving, lace making and other fiber crafts. This event is free to MCHS members.
