Osky Softball Riding Winning Streak
The Oskaloosa softball team just finished a very busy week. A more important fact is that it was a very successful week, as they pushed their season record to 9-0 in the early going.
Osky started off the week traveling to Des Moines to take on Grandview Park Baptist. That spelled trouble for GPB as Osky came out swinging and with good solid pitching, which gave the Indians the 11-0 win. Osky had 4 doubles in the game. Fr. Aubrey Miller continued to rip the cover off of the ball as she drove in 3 with a double and having 1 RBI. Each with doubles were Sr. Callie Arnold, Sr. Kelsie Tomlin and Fr. Alexis Westercamp. The winning pitcher was So. Kylee Silliman.
On Wednesday night Osky traveled to Pella for their first Little Hawkeye Conference game and they came out with a 6-1 victory. Osky jumped out early and tacked on some insurance runs. Pella had no answer for Freshman pitcher Alexis Groet as she went all 7 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 run, 5 strikeouts and 3 base on balls. Osky was led in hitting by Sr. Callie Arnold, who drove in 3 with a double. Also going 2-3 for the Indians were Jr. Peyton Zickefoose and Sr. Kelsie Tomlin.
Thursday found the Indians heading south to take on the Centerville Big Red in non-conference action. Osky quickly found themselves in a battle as Kylee Silliman took to the mound and threw a beautiful game. She held the Big Red at bay, allowing 1 run, 4 hits and striking out 8 over 7 innings. Osky was led in hitting by leadoff hitter Sr. Kelsie Tomlin, who continued her hot hitting by going 2-4, Sr. Libby Van Mersbergen had 2 RBI and Sr. Kailyn Risher had the other RBI in the 3-1 victory.
Coming into Friday night the lady Indians were looking to extend their winning streak early in the season.
What the big crowd did get were two very well played, tough games. Osky was able to hold on and just do enough to earn the double header sweep over the Panthers by identical 2-1 wins. Picking up the win in the first game was Fr. Alexis Groet as she allowed only 1 hit over 8 innings and 1 earned run while striking out 8 and walking 4 for the well-deserved win. Sr. Kelsie Tomlin doubled and picking up RBI’s for the Indians were Sr. Callie Arnold and So. Kylee Silliman.
In game 2 it was the Kylee Silliman and Jr. Peyton Zickefoose show. Zickefoose broke out the ‘big hit bat’ as she tied the game up at 1-1 with her first homerun of the season and then doubled later in the game. Sr. Kelsie Tomlin drove in the go ahead run for the Indians. Silliman turned yet another strong performance as she threw all 7 innings, allowing 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 6 srikeouts.
The Indians are now 9-0 and 3-0 on the season. The lady Indians were rained out of the Osky tournament this weekend. They get ready to head into another busy week this week, and look to move up in the polls as they were 12th last week.
