Riverside–The William Penn men’s golf team made a good mid-tournament push, but it was not enough to continue its year as the Statesmen competed at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships Monday and Tuesday.

William Penn placed sixth out of seven teams with a three-round score of 936 (315-300-321) at the par-72 Blue Top Ridge Golf Course. #8 Grand View won its fourth-straight league crown at 858 (285-284-289), while Viking Ben Wollam was the individual medalist at six-under-par 210 (74-66-70).

GVU will now represent the MCC at the NAIA National Championships on May 13-16 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

After completing one round, players were removed from the course Monday afternoon for a one-hour rain delay. The rest seemed to help the Statesmen the most as their second 18-hole tally of 300 was the third best in the field in that round to jump from a tie for last up to fifth. Unfortunately, the youthful squad, which does not lose any members to graduation, struggled in the final round to drop one spot in the standings.

Byron Lindeque (Jr., Boksburg, South Africa, Public Accounting) guided the navy and gold in a tie for 15th (out of 35 players) at 227 (79-72-76).

Kyle Hashimoto (Fr., Acampo, Calif., Undecided) was next in 23rd at 235 (76-75-84), while Tyler Lallier (Jr., Algona, Iowa, Business Management) took 27th with a 238 (82-78-78).

Brandon Dizon (Fr., San Leandro, Calif., Business Management) in 28th at 240 (78-78-84), and Jeremy Swink (Jr., Burlington, Iowa, Education), in a tie for 30th at 242 (84-75-83), rounded out the team’s scoring.
