GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College’s Sarah Burnell ’14 and Frank Canady ’14 have swept the Midwest Conference Women’s and Men’s Track Performer of the Week honors.

Burnell, from Grinnell, Iowa (Grinnell), set one school record and nearly another at the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College on Friday. She was part of the runner-up 4×400-meter relay team that clocked 3:56.27, crushing the previous Pioneer best of 3:59.22 established in 2012.

Burnell also went 2:12.64 in the 800, just missing her own school record by .18 of a second. Her time ranks eighth nationally and is nearly 5-1/2 seconds ahead of the next-best time in the MWC. The 4×400 unit’s time is more than 6 seconds better than the second-place time in the MWC and ranks 29th nationally.

Canady, from Iowa City, Iowa (West), ran the second-fastest 10,000-meter race in Pioneer history when he clocked 30:55.79 at the Drake Relays in Des Moines on Thursday.

That time, just .69 of a second off the school record, is the fastest in the MWC this season by more than a minute-and-a-half and ranks 30th nationally.

The MWC Field Performers of the Week are Illinois College’s Brittney Burgess (Women) and Ripon College’s Spencer Reisbeck (Men).
