MAHASKA COUNTY – Nosebleeds are very common, especially in children involved in physical activities. While nosebleeds are not an immediate danger, there are certain signs that indicate a visit to your doctor may be needed.

With the warmer weather finally arriving, children are able to get out and enjoy the outdoors again. Sometimes, kids can get a little rough while playing, causing a nosebleed. Most of the time, a nosebleed does not require medical attention.

“Nosebleeds may be unpleasant and sometimes even frightening, but most are able to be treated at home,” MHP Family Nurse Practitioner Lisa Smith shared.

Smith recommended tips for dealing with a nosebleed. “The most important thing to do, especially if you are working with children, is to remain calm. If you panic, the child will likely react in a similar fashion. It is important to keep everyone calm in order to stop the bleeding as quickly as possible.”

Smith also suggested blowing your nose. “I know it sounds wrong, but if there are clots in your nose, it may actually lengthen the bleeding time. Once you blow your nose, pinch the nostrils shut using your thumb and index finger for five to ten minutes. Make sure to sit up straight and lean forward to help prevent an upset stomach from swallowing blood.”

While nosebleeds usually stop on their own, some symptoms may require medical attention. “If you experience bleeding for over 20 minutes, seek immediate medical attention,” urged Smith. “If the bleeding follows a fall or other injury to your head, your nose may be broken and needs to be evaluated by a medical professional.”

Smith said anyone who experiences recurring and frequent nosebleeds should see a medical professional to rule out any underlying issues that may be causing the bleeding.
