McCastle Crushes Record Again
Des Moines–If he continues at this pace, Cornelius McCastle (Fr., McKinney, Texas, Industrial Technology) might reach the moon by the time the national championships roll around as he broke his own school mark at the Jim Duncan Invitational hosted by Drake Friday and Saturday.
McCastle set a new WPU mark in the high jump with a height of 6-9.75, surpassing last week’s old record of 6-8. The freshman, who won the event, moves up to second in the nation this spring with an NAIA automatic standard.
Sam Taylor (Jr., Eddyville, Iowa, Industrial Technology), in fourth place in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.12 seconds, and Chris Gossett (Fr., Park Forest, Ill., Mechanical Engineering), in fifth in the triple jump at 43-0.5, also finished in the top five.
Joshua Rankin (Fr., University Park, Ill., Undecided) gave WPU two high finishers in the triple jump, taking ninth at 41-9.25.
A trio of throwers was in the top ten as well. Derek Seddon (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) was sixth with a discus throw of 144-2, while Kalob Gist (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) was eighth with a shot put of 41-9.75. Van Love-Scott (Jr., Detroit, Mich., Education) placed ninth in the javelin at 135-4.
The Statesmen 4×100-meter relay team finished eighth overall in 44.90 seconds.
The William Penn women did all of their damage in the field events, headlined by two top tens from both Meaghan Foster (So., Centerville, Iowa, Undecided) and Emma Hoerr (So., Chillicothe, Ill., Physical Education). Foster was fourth in the shot put (41-7) and sixth in the hammer throw (135-4), while Hoerr took home fifth-place honors in the discus (120-3) and was sixth in the shot put (37-3).
Raveen Rhone (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif., Biology) matched Hoerr by also finishing fifth, doing so in the triple jump at 35-1.25. Alyssa Phillips (Fr., Gurnee, Ill., Communications) rounded out the finishes with the tenth-best high jump of 5-0.25.
