Harlan L. Caves age 73, of Fremont, formerly of Cedar Rapids passed away April 10, 2014 at the Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa.

Harlan was born May 23, 1940 in Fremont, Iowa the son of Donald and Maude Krusemark Caves. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1958.

Harlan was united in marriage to Francis J. Brown on May 31, 1958 in Bloomfield. They were the parents of three sons. They later divorced. He then married Nancy Green from Lamont, Iowa, and they later divorced.

Harlan worked for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids in the paint department and lastly in the Maintenance Department retiring in 1995 after working 34 years.

Harlan was an avid Nascar follower and admired #48 Jimmie Johnson Racing. He loved High Performance cars and trucks along with any kind of racing. He enjoyed watching sports on a daily basis, especially football and basketball. Harlan enjoyed the adventures he and his best buddy “Wimp” had, running errands and dining out at different eateries. He especially loved his pineapple shakes.

Harlan is survived by his three sons: Nick (Amy) Caves of Alburnett, Iowa; Bruce (Ruth) Caves of Fremont; and Todd (Christine) Caves of Port Byron, Illinois. Fourteen grandchildren: Josh, Gavin, Dillon, Ashley, Taylor, Colton, Morgan, Bryan, and Erin Caves, Nikki Rowe, Lindsey Lansing, Casey Gordon, Heather Davis, and Tucker Paris; eleven great grandchildren: Hunter, Savannah, Laken, Daxle, Lane, Landyn, Wyatt, Ryker, Rory, Tempest & Odelia.

Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Joshua Frail.

The family would like to send out a special thank you to all the caregivers that helped Harlan over the past four months. Ottumwa Hospital, Mercy Iowa City, and especially the staff at the Mahaska County Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa for their dedication and loving care of our loved one. Our gratitude to all of you.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 13, open after 12:00 noon at the Fremont Funeral Chapel with the family present from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 14, at 10:00 A.M. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel.
Burial will follow at Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
