William Penn University will welcome Dr. Howard Macy as the 2014 Beane Lecture Series guest speaker on Tuesday, April 1. While on campus, Dr. Macy will give two lectures—both are open to the public. The first, titled “Becoming the Real Deal: Building a Life of Integrity” will be held at 11:15 am in the Chief Mahaska Room of the Dana Atkins Memorial Union. Later that evening, he will present “Worship Without Pretense: Authenticity and the Psalms” in the Musco Technology Center at 7:00 pm.

Dr. Macy is professor emeritus at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon where he served 21 years as Professor of Religion and Biblical Studies, specializing in Old Testament, spiritual formation, and Quaker studies. Previously he taught at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas (12 years) and Earlham College (1 year).

Dr. Macy has written three books: Rhythms of the Inner Life: Yearning for Closeness with God; Stepping in the Light: Life in Joy and Power; and Laughing Pilgrims: Humor and the Spiritual Journey. He also currently writes a blog called “Laughing Pilgrims” found at www.howardmacy.com.

In conjunction with his visit to the William Penn campus, Dr. Macy will speak to pastors at the 2014 Pastors’ Short Course held Wednesday, April 2 from 8:30 am–12:00 noon at the William Penn University Musco Technology Center. The conference is sponsored by the Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends Pastors’ Association and is open to any vocational or lay pastor. “Study and Use of the Psalms” is the general theme. Registration is $35. Call Assistant Professor Mike Moyer at 641-673-1085 for the schedule and additional information.

The Beane Lecture Series was established through an endowment by Ercil and Maxine Beane in 2008 to develop programs that engage students, faculty, and the community in discussions about Quaker principles and philosophies. Through that endowment, a guest speaker is brought to William Penn University each year to share Quaker teachings and values with members of the school and surrounding community. William Penn University is pleased to welcome Dr. Howard Macy for the 2014 edition of the Beane Lecture Series.
