TUCSON, ARIZ.—A seven-run fourth inning was all the Central College baseball team needed to win its fifth consecutive game, a 10-2 victory over Augsburg College (Minn.) Sunday at the Kino Sports Complex.

The Dutch (5-2) continued to tear the cover off the ball at the plate, tallying 11 hits over eight innings while putting the finishing touches on the game with a three-run eighth. The Auggies (1-3) had eight hits of their own, but plated only two runners in the fifth.

Augsburg was picked to finish second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season after a runner-up finish last season.

“It was a really good game on our end,” coach Adam Stevens said. “We did a lot of things well. We put together disciplined at bats by swinging at strikes and fighting when we were behind in the count. We have some tough outs in our lineup right now, which make it tough on opposing pitchers.

“It’s a quality win against a quality opponent.”

Senior pitcher Judson McKown (Independence, Minn., Orono HS) allowed two runs and scattered seven hits over 6.0 innings with four strikeouts in the win. Junior pitcher Andy Carr (Rockford, Ill., Rockford Lutheran HS) pitched the final 3.0 innings and allowed only one hit.

“Judson was excellent,” said Stevens. “He kept them off balance and worked out of a couple jams. He put us in position to win. Andy was lights out and shut the door.”

Four Dutch batters had at least two hits apiece, led by senior designated hitter Robbie Rushing’s (West Des Moines, Valley HS) three hits and three runs batted in. Senior shortstop Jordan Judkins (Marshalltown) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while senior second baseman Adam Ariola (Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) and sophomore outfielder Dakotah Wolken (Dillon, East Marshall HS) each finished 2-for-4.

“The top of our lineup has been really good in Arizona,” Stevens said. “Our seniors have played a ton of games in their careers and they’re playing like veterans. They’re leading us the right way right now.”

And once again the Central defense was on top of its game, allowing only one batter to reach base via error.

“Our infield made some great plays today,” said Stevens. “Adam and Jordan have been solid up the middle and our corner infielders have also been playing well. It helps our pitchers have more confidence on the mound.”

The Dutch are 4-0 at the midway point of their trip. Central takes Monday off before returning to the diamond Tuesday against Crown (Minn.) at 1 p.m. (Pacific Time).

“We broke this trip into two parts and the second part begins Tuesday,” Stevens said.
