Larry D. Russell, Sr., 65, of Oskaloosa died Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the Oakwood Nursing and Rehab. Center in Albia. He was born April 5, 1948, in Oskaloosa the son of William and Ruth House Russell.
Larry graduated from Oskaloosa High School. Following school Larry enlisted in the United States Army. On July 25, 1975, after only six dates, he was united in marriage to Jane Strum at Oskaloosa; Jane died February 19, 2006. Larry’s military career as an army officer meant his family lived all over the world including: Germany, Alaska, Virginia, Kentucky and finally Clarksville, Tennessee. Larry retired from the Army on March 31, 1987, as a Staff Sergeant. Following his retirement he went to work for Trane in Tennessee. In 1991 they moved to Oskaloosa.
Larry enjoyed camping, baking pies, cooking and spending time with his family. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a kind loving man that would do anything to bring a smile to someone’s face. He loved life and kept his children and grandchildren close to his heart.
His family includes his children: Carrie (& Sam) Long of Ottumwa and Wyatt (& Amanda) Russell of Oskaloosa, Teresa Gott of Oskaloosa, Larry Russell, Jr. of What Cheer, and Melissa Russell of Ottumwa; three grandchildren: Brandon Davis, Tucker Long, and Parker Russell; two brothers and their wives: Donald (& Linda) Russell of Oskaloosa and Mick (& Joyce) Russell of Bradenton, Florida; and two sisters: Beverly (& Frank) Beadle of Oskaloosa and Linda Large of Birmingham, Alabama.
In addition to his wife Jane, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Staci Russell; a brother, Robert Russell; and three sisters, Betty Smothers, Shirley Alexander, and Caroline Russell.
As was Larry’s wish his body has been cremated. Burial of his urn will be next to his wife Jane in the University Park Cemetery in University Park at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
No visitation is planned.
Memorials may be made to the Heartland Humane Society due to Larry’s love for animals.
