Call for Volunteers to Help Fight Childhood Hunger
Did you know that more than half of Oskaloosa students qualify for free and reduced lunch? That means that due to their family’s income, these students are getting subsidized lunches and sometimes breakfasts to ensure that they’re not hungry at school.
But what about when they’re not at school? What about during weekends, school breaks and the summer?
The truth is there are children in our community dealing with food insecurity – at times, not knowing where their next meal is coming from.
But a growing group in Oskaloosa wants to help. Volunteers are coming together to start a Summer Feeding Program, providing lunch and activities to students during the summer, and a Backpack Program, sending students home on Friday during the school year with food to get them through the weekend.
And we need your help. Programs like these take a great amount of volunteer and financial support, but there are a huge number of people in our community who’d be willing to help meet these needs.
If you’re interested in being a part of the fight against childhood hunger, or you just want to find out more, come to an informational meeting Monday, March 10th at Noon at the United Way Building (500 High Avenue West).
Together, we can change our community for the better.
