Cedar Rapids–The Statesmen women’s bowling team failed to pick up momentum entering postseason play or earn some league bragging rights at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn placed sixth out of seven teams with 7,885 pins in six regular games and 16 Baker games. Grand View led qualifying with 8,330 pins.

#3 seed Clarke defeated #2 St. Ambrose 3-2 in the first round of knockout play, but it was the top-seeded Vikings who claimed the crown with a 4-2 decision over the Crusaders in the finals.

Maggie Suchoski of St. Ambrose paced qualifying play with a 202.0 average (1,212 pins), slipping past runner-up Stephanie Adams (Fr., Souris, Manitoba, Business Management) by 48 pins. Adams, guided by a high game of 264, owned a 194.0 average.

Kirstin Newberry (Sr., Holland, Mich., Secondary Education) was next at 179.0, while Montana Pence (Fr., Stronghurst, Ill., Elementary Education), at 163.7, and Niona Bruce (Fr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sociology & Psychology), at 158.0, also started all six games.

Blair Farris (So., Washington, Iowa, Elementary Education) averaged 185.7 pins in three games. Kaelee Fountain (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Psychology & Sociology) notched a 140.5 mark in two games, and MacKenzie Boyd (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) knocked down 120 pins in her only showing.

Next: William Penn enters postseason play in two weeks by traveling to Fort Worth, Texas for the xBowling Team Sectionals on Saturday and Sunday, March 15-16. The singles tournament will open the weekend on Friday, March 14.
