Evelyn Frost, 87, of Oskaloosa died Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

Evelyn was born October 24, 1926, in What Cheer, Iowa, the daughter of John Jasper and Eva Lution Harris Garrett.

Following high school Evelyn went to work at a factory in Waterloo, Iowa. On July 3, 1945, she was united in marriage to (John) Jack Frost in Oskaloosa. Following their marriage, Evelyn stayed home to care for her family. In the 1970’s she went to work at McGregor’s Furniture Store in Oskaloosa. Later she worked at 3M in Knoxville, retiring from there in 1988.

Evelyn was a very active member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Oskaloosa. Her family was her greatest joy. She delighted in spending time with Jack, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She kept herself very busy in her kitchen and garden. She and Jack always had a large garden that they would harvest and can their produce. Evelyn took great joy in teaching future generations the process and benefits of growing, canning and preparing homegrown produce. She was also a very talented cook and baker.

Her family includes her husband of over 68 years, Jack Frost of Oskaloosa; two daughters, Linda Frost-Surfus of Oskaloosa and Susan (& Stephen, Sr.) Salevsky, of Leighton; six grandchildren, Stephen, Jr. (& Kerri) Salevsky, Jessica (& Matthew) Perry, Melissa Salevsky (& Oosman Saeed), Julie (& B.J.) Carter, Shawn (& Deb) Surfus, and Tami (& Mark) Van Wyk; fifteen great grandchildren, Zackary Salevsky, Brandon Salevsky, Nicholas Salevsky, Jace Perry, Jayden Perry, Aaliyah Saeed, Jannah Saeed, and Shahrazad Saeed, Jayce Carter, Cayden Carter, Brayton Carter, Colton Surfus, Clayton Surfus, Dylan Van Wyk and Trey Van Wyk; a close family friend, Larry Surfus of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Carolyn Joslin of Oskaloosa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant granddaughter; a sister, Marie Larkins; and four brothers: Everett Garrett, Lester Garrett. Evan Garrett and Eugene Garrett.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 24, 2014, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Bruce Thompson officiating.
Private family burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with Reverend Michael Dotson officiating. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Sunday morning after 11:30 in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 2-4 Sunday afternoon to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Services.
