Keeping Tradition Alive, Come to the Dutch Costume Open House on February 27, 2014 at the Pella Historical Museum

PELLA -The Pella Historical Society & Museum opens its doors to local Dutch costume designers, Jacki Carver and Phyllis Zylstra, as they host a costume open house in the Historical Village, Heritage Hall on Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Parking will be on 2nd Street and enter through the Village Back Door.

“The Pella Historical Open House will give everyone the opportunity to see authentic Dutch costumes. We hope to inspire seamstresses to replicate the style of clothing worn by our ancestors. We also hope visitors will discover which costume they should be wearing for Tulip Time this year,” said Phyllis Zylstra, seamstress and costume designer.

Jacki and Phyllis will be available for Q & A during the open house. Refreshments will be served alongside a beautiful display of more than 20 different costumes. Dutch costume-making and designing can be really difficult, as the patterns are complicated and finding the right fabrics can be challenging. Learn some tips about costume-making when you attend the Dutch Costume Open House. Bring your questions and leave inspired and ready for Tulip Time!

“I enjoy learning about the techniques and fabrics that were used to make clothing that was worn in the Netherlands in centuries past, translating that information into modern sewing terms, and helping to pass those resources on to other seamstresses, who then can make very authentic-looking Dutch costumes.” said Lisa Carver, seamstress and costume designer.

The event is free for all museum members. Others are invited to attend and offer a free-will donation. All open house attendees are to enter through the East entrance on East Second Street, across from Trinity Reformed Church.

“Pella Historical’s board, staff, members and volunteers understand the importance of sharing our Dutch Heritage by hosting educational events like the Dutch Costume Open House. We hope to inspire all generations to take pride in Pella’s rich Dutch heritage,” said Carly Caligiuri, Visitor Services Coordinator at Pella Historical Society & Museum.
