Middle School Challenge Offers Fun for Students
Any middle school student from Mahaska, Marion, Jasper, Poweshiek, Keokuk or Wapello County is invited to spend the day at the Mahaska County ISU Extension and Outreach office in Oskaloosa on Saturday, March 8 to meet new people, play games, solve problems, and have a lot of fun! The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. The Middle School Challenge will challenge middle school students to make decisions, share, communicate and solve problems through a portable challenge course. 4-H Challenge is an adventure education program, based on a model of experiential learning and adventure-based education using cooperative games, activities and initiatives. It allows participants to view themselves as increasingly capable and competent by attempting a graduated series of activities which involve taking appropriate risks in a group atmosphere. Participants will go outside for several activities if weather permits.
There are a collection of props, materials and resources that will aid in helping participants to develop the life skills of problem solving, interpersonal communications, leadership, team work, self-esteem, character development, and much more. This event is being coordinated by Mahaska County 4-H youth staff. Amy Brainard, County Youth Coordinator and Codi Workman, Educational Programs Coordinator, have each recently received extensive training in 4-H Challenge. “We’re very excited to start this program and teach the middle schoolers more about themselves and others around them!” said Workman.
Cost to attend is free for any 4-H member and only $10 for non-4-H members. Registration information and a brochure for the event can be found on the Mahaska County ISU Extension and Outreach website at www.extension.iastate.edu/mahaska. Participants will need to bring their own lunch. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Please call 641-673-5841 with any questions. Registration deadline is Monday, March 3, 2013. Twelve registrations must be received in order to hold the event.
