Albia looks to return to the state wrestling championship again this year after a productive Class 2a sectional that the Blue Demons hosted on Saturday. Albia took first place overall in team points and advanced 7 wrestlers to the districts round next Saturday in Fairfield. Albia is ranked second in the state with six wrestlers making the top 10 in their respective weight classes. Shadow Leshen ranked 1st in the state remains unbeaten on the year in weight class 126 with a 54-0 record. Bryce Leshen is ranked 2nd at 132, and Brett Leshen is 3rd at 160. Griffin Osing and Dalton Folkerts are each ranked 3rd in their weight classes.
Next week will set up an interesting battle at the district contest as number 1 ranked Mediapolis is slated to compete along with Albia in Fairfield. “You are going to see some potential state matches actually take place in Fairfield as some Mediapolis grapplers will be seeded against our wrestlers” said Blue Demon coach Dave Winger. Mediapolis advanced 12 wrestlers out of the Washington sectional to the Fairfield district. The number 1 ranked wrestler in 2a 152 is Medapolis’ Drew Buster – he will go up against Albia’s #3 ranked Griffin Osing Saturday. Meanwhile, Mediapolis’ Number 1 ranked Drew Foster at 160 will go up against Albia’s #3 ranked Brett Leshen this Saturday.
