The Oskaloosa girls basketball team came into Friday night’s game with Pella Christian with some momentum having played one of their best all-around games of the season earlier in the week against Knoxville. What the girls did was turn in their first strong back to back performances of the season.

Osky came out in the first quarter and was trying to go inside but kept running into trouble with Pella Christians height as several shots were blocked to go along with a couple turnovers and cold shooting found Osky trailing in a defensive first quarter 9-5.

The start of the second quarter seemed to shed a new light on Osky as they came out and were playing strong defense coupled with tenacious rebounding, especially by the guards Paige Howard , Asia Laudermilch and Taylor Richardson, which was causing Pella Christian plenty of trouble. Osky’s offense started to heat up as Chace Moyer hit a put back shot followed by a layup from freshman Alexis Westercamp, as Osky trailed 13-11. That seemed to spark Osky as Richardson hit Brittany McQueen with a beautiful pass for a lay in to tie the score at the half 15-15.

One thing that was much better was that Osky was taking care of the basketball better. It showed in the third quarter as Osky came out playing with confidence, as Howard drove to the basket for a layup and Westercamp made a great baseline move for another lay in. Pella Christian hit a long 3 pointer and the game was tied at 22-22. Howard was a rebounding machine and the guards were keeping the ball alive. Everyone was getting on the floor and the hard work was paying off as McQueen hit a basket and was fouled. After making the foul shot, McQueen found Howard going to the hoop on a nice pass and that put Osky up 27-26. But the back and fourth quarter kept going as Pella Christian answered with a long 2 point shot, only to see Westercamp hit a 15 ft. jumper. Pella Christian finished it off with a last second shot to lead 32-31 at the end of the quarter.

Osky came out hitting the boards and found the offense had disappeared, as they couldn’t find the basket. Pella Christian was beginning to have more and more success going inside as they spread. Chace Moyer tried to wake Osky’s offense up with a short bucket, but Pella Christian hit a 3 pt. and finished Osky off, winning the game 46-33.

Osky was led byWestercamp with a double double 11 pts. and 11 rebounds, followed by Howard with 5 pts. and 8 rebounds, Laudermilch 5 pts. and 9 rebounds, McQueen 5 pts. 3 rebounds, Richardson with 3 pts. 5 assists and 3 steals, and Moyer 4 pts.

Assistant Coach Peterson said they are very pleased with the way the girls have played the last two games, and they just want them to continue to improve and compete when they step foot on the floor.
