Eleanor Veldhuizen, 75, of Oskaloosa died Sunday, January 19, 2014, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospital in Oskaloosa.

Eleanor was born May 19, 1938, in Oskaloosa the daughter of Edward and Bernice Brummel Goemaat. She graduated from Rose Hill High School with the class of 1956. Following high school she worked at the old Continental Overall Factory in Oskaloosa.

On January 25, 1957, Eleanor was united in marriage to Melvin Veldhuizen at Oskaloosa. To this union Debra and Dennis were born.

Following their marriage Eleanor stayed home to care for her family and home. She worked as a cook at the Cedar School and later Eddyville Community Schools. Later Eleanor and Melvin parted. Last she worked at Christian Opportunity Center, retiring from there after many years of service.

Eleanor was a lifelong member of Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed reading, decorating her yard, and traveling. She would always find rocks to bring home to her yard from places she had visited. She delighted in spending time with her family. She was also an excellent cook.

Her family includes her two children and their spouses, Debra and Daryl Six of Oskaloosa and Dennis and Jil Veldhuizen of rural Oskaloosa; six grandchildren, Derek (& Sarah) McClure of Baltimore, Maryland, Afton McClure (& fiancée, Kerry Keovongsach) of Ottumwa, Taner McClure of Cedar Falls, Mandy (& Curt) Johnston of Eddyville, Abby (& Scott) Canfield of Ankeny, and Dr. Dustin (& Megan) Veldhuizen of Oskaloosa; two step granddaughters, Brook (& Austin) Blackwell of Oskaloosa and Paige (& Joe) Pierson of Oskaloosa; several great grandchildren with more expected soon; a brother and his wife, Don and Glenda Goemaat of rural New Sharon; a sister and her husband, Lois and Cornie Hol of Oskaloosa; a brother in law, Roy Poe of Oskaloosa; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Carol Goemaat in infancy and Dolores Poe.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor Trenton Hol officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Open visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
Memorials may be made to Christian Opportunity Center.
