Mabel passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa at the age of 90 years, 4 months, 21 days.
Isabella Mabel Whipple, daughter of Ernest Charles and Elizabeth Ann (Cowley) Wells, was born August 17, 1923, in Hampton, Middlesex, England.
Mabel started working at age 14 in a candy factory; she worked there for 2 years before taking a job with Halls and Halls, an airplane factory. She remained at the airplane factory for 13 years.
When Mabel’s best friend married a service man and moved to Iowa, Mabel decided to move to the United States as well. She settled in Oskaloosa, where she met her future husband, Laclede Francis Whipple. They married November 15, 1952.
While her children were school aged she worked at Monarch Laundry and later at Oskaloosa Food Products. The Oskaloosa High School lunch program was the last place she worked, retiring in 1977.
Mabel attended the First Assembly of God for over 40 years. She enjoyed knitting for many years and in her later years enjoyed number puzzles.
Mabel’s family includes her sons: Stephen C. Whipple of Oskaloosa and Raymond F. Whipple of Newton; her grandchildren: Marjorie Whipple of Reinbeck and Chad Stephen Whipple of New York, NY; a great granddaughter, Ella Josephine Wagner; and a brother, Eric Arthur Wells.
In addition to her husband, Mabel was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services for Mabel will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mike Dotson of the First Assembly of God officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Friday at the funeral chapel; the family will be present from 4-6 to greet visitors.
Memorials may be made to the MHP Hospice Serenity House or the First Assembly of God.
