Jesse Leland “Pete” Greenhalgh, age 93, of Oskaloosa, IA passed away Thursday morning, December 19, 2013 at the Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa, IA.

Jesse was born July 14, 1920 in Tipperary, Lucas County, Iowa to Frank Henry and Louella Hendrix Greenhalgh. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1938. He married Thelma Ailene Boles June 1, 1942 in Kirksville, MO.

Early in life Jesse worked for the Rock Island Railroad. Later he worked for Zimmerman Steel in Bettendorf, IA before entering the U.S. Army during World War II.

Jesse entered the army September 18, 1942, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in Northern Europe. He received the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European/African/Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, one Service Stripe and two Overseas Bars. He was a Tech/Sergeant when he received his discharge December 15, 1945.

Jesse was employed with Clow Company from 1955 to July 1967, at which time he and his wife, Thelma, and son, Robert, moved to Davenport, Iowa where he was employed by Kartridg Pak, as a machinist, from July 1967 until his retirement in September 1985. He and his wife moved back to Oskaloosa October 1994.

Jesse enjoyed fishing, playing cards and Sudoku puzzles. He was a member of the American Legion for many years.

Jesse’s family includes his wife of over 71 years, Thelma of Oskaloosa; his daughters: Janet Behrens of Knoxville, IA and Phyllis Elaine (Leslie) Guthrie of Thornton, CO; and son, Robert (Mary Walker) Greenhalgh of Tempe, AZ; and five grandchildren: Kurt (Nicole) Behrens of Westside, IA; Lisa (Wesley) Kennedy of Black Hawk, CO; Kristin (Mike) Holdeman of Reasoner, IA; Kimberly Guthrie of Thornton, CO; and Jennifer (Andrew Simpson) Greenhalgh of Oxnard, CA. He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter, many nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Jesse was preceded in death by a son, Larry Allan; a son-in-law, Virgil Behrens; a brother, William B. Greenhalgh; sisters: Maxine Swick, Vione “Happy” Dunsmoor, and Regina Cubit and an infant brother and sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday morning, December 21, 2013 at Garland Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tom Boomershine officiating.
Burial will be in Bellefountain Cemetery near Tracy, IA with Military Honors by the Oskaloosa Honor Guard.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Friday morning at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be present from 6-8 p.m. to greet visitors.
