Wichita, Kan.–The Statesmen defense was left wanting after a tough performance in a 102-83 non-conference men’s basketball loss to Friends Tuesday.

Three players tallied at least 20 points, but William Penn (9-5) failed to extend its winning streak to double figures in a game where it was outshot 59.0%-39.4%.

The visitors scored the first eight points and seemed to be on their way to their tenth straight victory. Unfortunately, the Eagles (9-2), winners of nine in a row themselves, went on a 31-12 run, eventually leading 49-39 at halftime.

Still behind 64-54 early in the second stanza, the navy and gold battled back with 13 of the next 15 points to regain the edge. The Statesmen led 70-68 with 7:33 remaining, but the waning minutes were dominated by the hosts.

Alec Schwab (Jr., Peru, Ill., Business Management) led WPU with 22 points (five three-pointers) in addition to four steals.

Marc Wilson (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) recovered from early foul trouble to finish with 21 points. Kelly Madison (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa, Physical Education) also contributed 20 points.

Blake Walker (Sr., Rose Garden, Physical Education) tallied seven points with six rebounds and five assists, while Tyler Stahle (So., Bountiful, Utah, Business Management) ended the evening with six points.

William Penn had three fewer turnovers (11-14), leading to a 25-16 edge in points off mistakes. The team was outrebounded 42-36, leading to a 16-9 deficit in second-chance points.

Next: William Penn travels to North Newton, Kan. Wednesday to face Bethel in non-conference play at 7 p.m.
