INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Grinnell College and Simpson College men’s basketball teams combined to break an NCAA Division III record in Saturday’s 156-150 victory by the Pioneers.

The teams combined for 118 free throw attempts, shattering the previous mark of 105 set by Earlham and Oberlin in 1992. Grinnell and Simpson made 92 of those shots, one shy of the D-III mark of 93 established by Grinnell and Beloit in 1998.

Grinnell finished the game 45-of-54 from the free throw line and Simpson 47-of-64.

The overall NCAA record for free throw attempts in a game is 142, set in 1997 by Southern Indiana and Northern State at the D-II level.
