Charles Augustine, 83, of Oskaloosa passed away Sunday evening, November 3, 2013, at his home in Oskaloosa.

Charles Harold Augustine, son of Harold and Mary (Vail) Augustine, was born February 16, 1930, at the rural home of his parents near Rose Hill, Iowa. Charles was a 1947 graduate of Lacey High School and then began farming with his father.

Charles married Frances Vander Waal in 1949 and to this union four children were born. He later married Betty (Lamers) Fynaardt, June 30, 1978. They made their home east of Oskaloosa. Charles loved the farm and always enjoyed helping his family in their farming operations. Charles was actively involved in farming until 1974, at which time he began selling real estate and co-owned the United Realty Company. Charles served as a Mahaska County Supervisor from 1978 to 1984. Following his terms as supervisor, Charles resumed his real estate career; and eventually sold his company to Hawkeye Real Estate. He will be remembered by many as always having a pen in his pocket and ready to make a deal.

Throughout his life time, Charles served on or was a member of the Barnes City Co-op Board, the Farm Bureau, the YMCA Board, the Federal Land Bank Board and the Realty Board. He was a member of the Central Reformed Church since 1978.

Early in life Charles enjoyed Minnesota fishing trips; later he enjoyed wood working, especially building purple martin bird houses. He also enjoyed playing cards and solving Sudoku puzzles.

Charles family includes his wife, Betty of Oskaloosa; his children: Bill (Sue) Augustine of Chicago; Linda (Jim) Lee of Oskaloosa; Carol (Bob) Herr of Fremont; Diane (Dennis) Green of Oskaloosa; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and from his union with Betty, his extended family: Gene (Shari) Fynaardt of Oskaloosa; Crystal Fynaardt of Oskaloosa; Jerome (Linda) Fynaardt of Rose Hill; and Scot (Diane) Fynaardt of Pella; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Marvin Molyneux of Oskaloosa; a sister-in-law, Darlene (Harold) Slagter of Oskaloosa; and a brother-in-law, Gerald (Sue) Lamers of Earlham.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Dora Lamers; a son-in-law, Donald Jo Spears; two grandsons: Larry Koehler and Jeremy Spears; and a great grandson, Mathew Edgar.

Funeral services for Charles will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Pastor Case Van Kempen and Pastor Andy Baker officiating. There will be a 10:15 family prayer service in the west wing of the sanctuary preceding the service.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be present from 4:30-7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the MHP Hospice Serenity House.
