PELLA — The Central College volleyball squad couldn’t find its offensive footing Tuesday night as conference-rival Coe College swept the Dutch in three straight sets.

Coe (15-2 overall, 2-0 conference) defeated Central (4-9 overall, 0-2 conference) 25-20, 25-19, 25-19. Central struggled to maintain consistency, hitting only .036 for the match against Coe’s .188 hitting percentage.

“It was a disappointing match,” said coach Kent Clayberg. “I didn’t feel like we were ready to start right away. We started on our heels and never played like the aggressor.”

Middle hitter Hannah Welter (junior, Lincoln, Neb., Lincoln SW HS) had a team-high seven kills. Right-side hitter Emily Stoakes (sophomore, Gladbrook, Gladbrook-Reinbeck HS) and outside hitter Jessica Laflin (junior, Phoenix, Ariz., Horizon Honors HS) each totaled six kills. Setter Claire Stewart (junior, Colorado Springs, Colo., Classical Academy) tallied 25 assists and nine digs. Libero Tori Zempel (sophomore, La Porte City, Union Community HS) had 20 digs.

Clayberg hopes the team controls the small details for the remainder of the season.

“There are many details that we struggle with that make it hard to be efficient,” he said. We need to own those details. This is a team that is capable, we just aren’t owning it.”

Central jumps into action on Friday at the Northland Athletic Conference Challenge in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. The Dutch play Concordia (Wis.) at 5 p.m. and Aurora (Ill.) at 8 p.m.
