William Penn Swept by Ashford
Clinton–The Statesmen volleyball team had a rough start to its busy week with a 3-0 loss to Ashford in non-conference action Tuesday.
William Penn (9-14) lost by scores of 15-25, 17-25, 20-25.
The visitors, who were outhit .299-.133, stayed close in the first set, trailing just 5-4 early. The second set was much of the same with the navy and gold trailing by just two at 9-7. Unfortunately, in each of the first two sets, Ashford pulled away to take a commanding 2-0 advantage.
William Penn finally took a lead in the third set, going up by as much as three on four separate occasions. The Statesmen led 20-17, but the Saints (13-5) recorded the final eight points to close out the sweep.
Alanna Connors (Sr., Libertyville, Ill., Biology) guided the offense with eight kills and a .312 attack clip. Jeanette Cunningham (Sr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education) and Kristal Campos (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) added seven kills each.
Dayna Sammons (Jr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) and Leyra Jusino (So., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) paired up for 16 and 15 assists, respectively. Sarah Stepp (So., Oakville, Mo., Undecided) finished with 21 digs.
“We started out slow, but the things we have been practicing are starting to be executed in games so I am really happy about that,” Head Coach Jennifer Carlson said.
