November 29, 1949 – September 21, 2013
Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 63

Marc passed away Saturday afternoon, September 21, 2013, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Services Serenity House.

Marc Gail Vanderwilt, son of Dick H. and Dolores Marie (Dazier) Vanderwilt, was born, November 29, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm on the banks of the South Skunk River and attended Lacey and North Mahaska Community Schools, graduating in 1968. He furthered his education at William Penn College where he studied economics. While in college and after completing his degree in 1972, Marc lived at home and continued to help his father farm.

On June 17, 1972, he married the love-of his-life, Barbara Ann Nicholas; they made their home on a place one mile north of his family home and in 1981 they moved to the home place. Marc loved farming and because their farm was located near a river, he soon became a skilled bulldozer operator, building levees and terraces. In addition to his farming responsibilities, Marc was employed for 20 years by Biovance, now Church and Dwight.

Marc was an avid outdoorsman and taught his sons to work, care for and love the land and its bounty. He enjoyed hunting and cutting firewood on the many acres of timber on their farm. Marc also had a passion for education and followed his father’s example by serving as an 18 year member and past president of the North Mahaska Community School Board.

Marc’s family includes his wife of 41 years, Barbara Vanderwilt of Lacey; two sons and daughters-in-law: Ben and Shelby Vanderwilt of Oskaloosa and Todd and Ashley Vanderwilt of Lacey; a granddaughter, Brooklyn; a sister, Kim Vanderwilt of Indianapolis, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Pearl Vanderwilt of Oskaloosa and nephews: Clark, Louis and Jeff Vanderwilt.

In addition to his parents, Marc was preceded in death by two brothers: Clair and Morgan Chester “Chet” Vanderwilt.
