Oskaloosa, Iowa – Five years is an eternity in the entertainment industry, and what was once controversial can quickly become commonplace.

Grand Theft Auto 5 made its debut in Oskaloosa at midnight on the 17th, and a small crowd gathered at Game Stop in Oskaloosa to collect their copy of the much anticipated release.

The Grand Theft series has been a lightning rod of controversy in past years, and has cruised in just a few days time to a 1 billion dollar earnings payday, reports Fox News. 800 million of that was earned in just the first 24 hours.

The crowd at Game Stop was joking and talking about the individual that was arrested just moments before, reminding bystanders of the game. “You missed it dude,” comes a comment from the crowd.

According to the crowd, the draw is, “you get to shoot things, blow something up.” The difference the crowd says between Grand Theft and other games that are similar in nature is that “it’s hilarious” the way it’s done.

Tyler Menninga says that being able to steal cars and rob banks in the game “is probably the best part. Stuff you can’t do in real life.”

Menninga found out two months ago about the release that has been five years in the making.

Menninga had been waiting since 9 pm for the planned release at midnight, and he was unsure how many copies would be available for purchase.

“It’s a pretty good game,” Menninga says.
