Karol “Greyhound” Chitwood, 68, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Mercy West Lakes Hospital in Des Moines.
Karol was born April 19, 1945, at Collinsville, Illinois, the son of Howard and Lora Mae Miller Chitwood. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Pyle and later divorced. On December 8, 1990, he was united in marriage to Debra Hartsock at Oskaloosa, she died December 19, 2004. Due to an illness early in life, Karol was disabled. He worked various jobs that his disability would allow.
He was a member of the Gateway Church of the Nazarene and the Eagles. Early in life he enjoyed playing the drums and dancing. He also liked visiting with friends.
His family includes his four children, James Chitwood of Ottumwa, Ida Chitwood of Columbia, Missouri, Laura Chitwood of Columbia, Missouri and Karl Chitwood of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren, Aven Chitwood, Lindsey Chitwood, Damarian Young and Tra-nasia Bland; three step children, Donna, Josh and Robbie; two step grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (& Margaret) Chitwood of Oskaloosa; a sister in law, Katherine Chitwood of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife Debra, he was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Lacereta McIntire, and a brother, Donald Chitwood.
As was his wish his body has been cremated.
A memorial service will be held September 21, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa.
Burial of the cremated remains will be held in the Beacon Cemetery.
No visitation is planned. Arrangements are by the Bates Funeral Chapel of Oskaloosa.
