Oskaloosa–The William Penn volleyball team will look to be the darkhorse of the league this fall as Thursday’s Midwest Collegiate Conference’s preseason rating was released.

The Statesmen, headed by first-year coach Jennifer Carlson, were 28-15 (3-3 MCC) last year. The navy and gold are picked to finish fifth out of seven teams in the league. It is a jump of one spot for WPU from last fall.

2012 co-regular season champions Viterbo and Grand View are neck and neck at the top with Viterbo holding a slim 34-33 lead in total points. The V-Hawks claimed four first-place votes, while the Vikings took the final three.

Clarke is third with 25 points, while St. Ambrose is fourth with 22 points. William Penn collected 16 points, while Mount Mercy (11) and AIB (6) round out the rating.

William Penn opens 2013 by playing at the Mount Mercy Zio Johno’s Mustang Invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 23-24.
