Oskaloosa–With the 2012-2013 school year well in our rearview and the dog days of summer upon us, the William Penn Sports Information office felt it only appropriate to give one more nod to the greatest moments from another successful Statesmen Athletics season. Over the next several days, the top ten stories from last year will be revisited.

At #10, we are going to highlight the ‘also-rans’–stories that just missed the cut–and again with a successful year, there are LOTS!

–The women’s golf team continued its rise to the top of the Midwest Collegiate Conference heap, just missing out on its first trip to nationals. The squad, which was ranked as high as 23rd, finished first in five events, but fell just shy of the postseason with a program-best second-place finish at the league championships.

–Yanni Gallagher and Valinn McReynolds both qualified for cross country nationals, the first time since 2003 that both the men’s and women’s teams had postseason participants.

–Headlined by seven all-MCC performers, the softball program recorded its 18th-straight winning season.

–Brandon Barboza and Breanne Underwood both qualified for bowling nationals. It was the first time in the sport’s four-year history that a male and female competitor advanced to the final tournament of the year.

–The men’s soccer team accomplished something none of its five predecessors could by advancing to the MCC Tournament Semifinals, upsetting #3 seed St. Ambrose in the first round.

–The volleyball squad claimed 28 wins, the most for the programs in nearly three decades, dating all the way back to 1985.

–A deep women’s outdoor track and field squad produced the most points in nearly a decade at the league meet.

–For the second time in three years, the women’s basketball team placed second in the MCC. The Statesmen played for their first conference title since the 1980s in the final game of the league slate.
