Florence Lillian Voss, 88, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

Florence was born September 16, 1924, in Estherville, Iowa, the daughter of Fredrick and Lavina McFadden Newman. She attended school at Ottumwa High School and The Open Bible Institute in Des Moines. Following school she moved to California. On May 3, 1957, she was united in marriage to Howard E. Voss in Pasadena, California; he died on October 13, 2005. While living in California, Florence worked for an airplane company supporting the war effort. In 1968, they moved back to Oskaloosa and she stayed home to raise her family. Florence was a member of the Faith Evangelical Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed volunteering at the Mahaska County Outreach, collecting dolls and trips to Wal-Mart.

Her family includes her two children and their spouses, Stephen and Michele Voss of Oskaloosa and Shelly and Willie May of Winser, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Jessica May, Jasmine (& Hector) Seguin, Dustin Voss (& Abigail Evans), and William “Bud” May (& Kelsey Fiscus); five great grandchildren, Madison, McKenna, Ashton, Maycie and Miles; a sister, Zella Halbrook of Alamo, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Florence was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Pauline Pieratt; and four brothers, Robert Newman, Donald Newman, Charles Newman and Lauren Newman.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 25, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Brown officiating.
As was Florence’s wish her body has been cremated, and burial of the urn will be in the University Park Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Friday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Friday evening from 5-7 to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the MHP Hospice Serenity House.
