Wartburg outlasts Central baseball team in doubleheader
WAVERLY— Wartburg College subdued the Dutch offense for a second time in a weekend series, limiting the Central College baseball team to just nine hits as the team endured a 13-0 loss before suffering a 5-1 setback in the Iowa Conference doubleheader Sunday.
The Knights (25-5 overall, 14-2 conference) tallied runs early, scoring four runs in the second and four more in the third inning. Wartburg posted a two-run fifth inning and added three more in the sixh. The Dutch (15-12 overall, 7-9 conference) were unable to score a run with only three hits in the opening game. Dirk Lindaman (senior, Ankeny) took the loss on the mound, pitching four innings.
In the final game, Wartburg took another early lead, scoring one in the first and one run in the second. Wartburg batted off a home run in the fifth before driving in two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Central attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth with Adam Ariola (second base, junior, Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) slugging a home run. The Dutch had three left on base after the third out. Ariola had three hits on the day and one RBI.
Judson McKown (junior, Maple Plain, Minn., Orono HS) pitched all eight innings for Central and was charged the loss.
The Dutch have the week to prepare for another Iowa Conference series against Buena Vista University (14-12 overall, 6-10 conference) at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field in Pella.
