Jon William Holsten, 67, of Fremont died Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Jon was born Wednesday, May 23, 1945 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the son of Willis and Doris Johnson Holsten. Jon graduated from Humboldt Senior High School in Humboldt, Iowa. He then attended Wartburg College and graduated with a degree in Biology in 1967. Following graduation from college, Jon joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged following his service during the Vietnam War in 1972. After his discharge, Jon worked various places until going to work at McCurdy Seed and later becoming a plant manager at both the Fremont and Vinton, Iowa locations. On August 20, 1988, Jon was united in marriage to Linda Sue Ruskey in Mahaska County, Iowa. Jon worked lastly as a business agent for the Laborer’s Union Local 566 and as a public organizer for Union 353. Early on Jon coached girl’s basketball for several years. Jon loved fishing and spending time with his grandkids. He was a huge Green Bay Packers fan and traveled to several games with his son Mike. He was a member of the Laborer’s Union 566 and Union 353. Jon will always be remembered as a very loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife: Linda Holsten of Fremont; a son and his fiancée: Mike Benson and Christine Minks of Des Moines; 5 grandchildren: Jake, Grace, Megan, Peyton, and Austin; and 3 sisters: Gretchen Snyder of Dumfries, Virginia, Sue Levorson of Humboldt, Iowa, and Mary (& Mark) Duffy of Findlay, Ohio.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents.

As was his wish, Jon’s body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
No visitation is planned at this time. Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
