Betsy Boer passed away Tuesday at her home in Fremont at the age of 88 years and five days.
Elisabeth Boer, daughter of Jacobus Pieter and Ebrina Anna Wolfert Van Bendegem, was born, March 14, 1925, in Hontenisse, Zeeland, Netherlands. Betsy married Arie Boer on November 14, 1945 in Ghent, Belgium. Arie returned to America in January 1946 and Betsy followed on a war bride ship, the S.S. Brazil, in April 1946. Betsy and Arie began their married life farming near Eddyville. In 1954 they moved to a farm south of Fremont, where they lived until 1983. They then moved to Fremont. Betsy always enjoyed gardening and having coffee with friends.
Her family includes her sons: Jack, Terry (and Joan), Lloyd, Arlin (and Cathy), and Larry (and Megan); 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; a sister, Janna Kints; and three brothers, Peiter, Jacobus and Gysbrecht Van Bendegem.
In addition to her parents and her husband of 57 years, Betsy was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachel Boer; two brothers, Egbert and Johannes Van Bendegem; and two sisters, Truis Van Langeveld and her twin sister, Cornelia DePutter.
Memorial services for Betsy will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa with Rev. Dr. Dennis Morey officiating.
Visitation will be held that day from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. Visitors may greet the family during fellowship time following the service.
As was her wish, her body has been cremated and a private burial of her ashes will be in Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery, Fremont at a later date.
