Iowa State Senator Tim Kapucian

Greetings from Under the Golden Dome

This week saw floor action on numerous bills in the Senate. These bills all pretty much enjoyed bipartisan consensus and moved through rather quickly. The more contentious bills are still waiting for Senator Tom Courtney (D-Burlington) to return from surgery to provide the 26th vote for the majority.

A bill I sponsored passed out of the Senate unanimously and is on its way to the House. The bill, Senate File 316, dealt with procedures relating with farm tenancy termination. As most involved with agriculture understand, September 1st is the universal date in Iowa to receive farmland contract termination notice from a landlord unless otherwise stipulated by a written agreement. A rare section to the Code exempts tracts of 40 acres or less. This is a little known fact and several farmers have invested in the future crop only to find out they have lost their lease. This bill removes the 40 acre exemption from Code. I believe this will help younger and beginning farmers.

The Capitol was full of visitors this week. It is always good to see people from back home.

See you out and about the district.
