MAHASKA COUNTY – Mahaska Health Partnership Family Nurse Practitioner Lisa Smith began practicing with the health system in February. Smith treats patients of all ages and has a special understanding for those struggling with emotional stress and mental health issues.

“Life is tough and sometimes it can get you down,” Smith expressed. “Often, when a patient is experiencing a physical health problem there is a mental component.”

As a primary healthcare provider, Smith said she feels that evaluating her patient’s physical and emotional health simultaneously is important. “If a person’s physical condition is making them depressed or being depressed is causing them to be unhealthy, it’s a double edged sword and it’s important for me to help them with both of those issues; not just one or the other.

“As a Nurse Practitioner, I was trained to treat patients holistically, taking their mental, physical, spiritual and emotional well-being into consideration when evaluating their health and prescribing treatment options. I want to hear the ‘rest’ of the story from my patients so I can take all of those factors into consideration,” Smith explained.

Smith, who has almost five years of experience providing primary care for patients of all ages, is now accepting new patients on the MHP campus in Oskaloosa. As a family nurse practitioner, Smith can care for your entire family’s primary healthcare needs from acute diagnosis such as strep throat or ear infection to minor injuries and illnesses, as well as annual exams.

Smith is available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and same day appointments are often available. For appointment, call 641-672-3360.
