Edwards, Pannell Win Events at Central Invite

Pella–A large number of top-tens were posted as the Statesmen indoor track and field team competed at the Central Invitational Saturday.

As a team, William Penn placed second out of six teams with 128 points. Host Central won the event with 228 points.

Alex Edwards (So., Knoxville, Iowa) and Frederick Pannell (Fr., Trenton, Mo.) guided the squad as event champions Saturday. Edwards won the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.20 seconds, while Pannell claimed the triple jump title with a jump of 43-5.

A handful of silvers were posted, including Sam Taylor (So., Eddyville, Iowa) doing so in the heptathlon with 4,112 points. The sophomore’s feat was highlighted by winning the 55-meter hurdles in 8.19 seconds. He also placed second in the 1,000-meter run in 3:04.88.

Gabriel Green (Sr., Anniston, Ala.) earned two runner-up honors in the 200 (22.93 seconds) and 400-meter dashes (51.83 seconds). Bryndon Douglas (Fr., Omaha, Neb.), with a long jump of 20-2.25, and Van Love-Scott (So., Detroit, Mich.), with a triple jump of 40-2.75, placed second as well.

Yanni Gallagher (Fr., Kanab, Utah) and Kenbea Walker (So., McKinney, Texas) both matched Green as two-time top-ten finishers. Gallagher was third in the 1,000-meter run (2:40.57) and eighth in the 3,000-meter run (9:25.52), while Walker was fourth in the 200-meter dash (23.10 seconds) and ninth in the 400-meter dash (54.45 seconds).

The 4×400-meter relay team earned bronze at 3:36.07, and Kalob Gist (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa) managed a fourth-place showing in the shot put (40-2). A pair of fifth-place performances came from Trevor Volz (So., Adel, Iowa) in the 55-meter hurdles (8.30 seconds) and Bryce Armstrong (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) in the weight throw (39-9.25).

Deane Wichelt (So., Durant, Iowa), with a 1,000-meter run time of 2:43.91, and David Briscoe (Fr., Champaign, Ill.), with a 55-meter hurdles time of 8.31 seconds, were both sixth, while Nick Thomas (So., Salmon, Idaho) was tenth in the 1,000 at 2:52.34.
