PELLA—Cold-shooting plagued the Central College women’s basketball team as Simpson College remained unbeaten in Iowa Conference play with a 73-56 victory Wednesday night.

Central (9-9 overall, 2-5 conference) hit just 32 percent from the field in the opening half before finishing at 39 percent for the game. The No. 14-ranked Simpson (17-1 overall, 7-0 conference) took an early lead, with a 9-21 start, and was up 35-21 at the half. The Dutch held a 36-32 advantage in rebounds, but Central had 29 turnovers, ten more than the Storm.

“There is a reason that Simpson is ranked,” said coach Mike Jacobsma. “They are a good team, but we need to take care of the basketball.”

Guard Alyssa Schwartz (senior, Titonka, WCLT HS) scored a team-high 17 points, shooting 63 percent from the field and 60 percent from 3-point range. Guard Alyssa Henrich (freshman, Newell, Newell-Fonda HS) shot a career-high 12 points and grabbed a career and team-high seven rebounds.

“Alyssa Schwartz had a good offensive game tonight,” Jacobsma said. “But we need to play together as a team. Offensively we weren’t in sync the entire game. We couldn’t execute what we wanted to do.”

Central treks to Storm Lake Saturday, with a women’s-men’s doubleheader against Buena Vista University (7-11 overall, 0-7 conference). On Monday, the Dutch claimed a victory over the Beavers in Pella, 74-61. The women’s game tips off at 5 p.m.
